Western-Central Coast of Italy

In Oct, after spending a few days in Sienna, we are considering traveling by train/bus from Sienna, through Grosseto, down to the port of Civitavecchia. We've not explored that area before and have time to spend the night somewhere between Sienna and Civitavecchia (Grosseto, Orbetello?). We couldn't find anything in any of Rick's books, so we would love some input from someone who knows that region, could tell us a little bit about it, and tell us the best spot to stop for the night?

We are not tied to the route from Sienna to Grosseto and could go from Sienna through Volterra to Cecina and then on down to Civitavecchia if seeing more of the coastline is recommended. We will have already visited Volterra so would not want to stop there again, but would not be opposed to going that way if the coastal route from Cecina to Grosseto is more desirable than the mountain route between Sienna and Grosseto.

Thanks to anyone who has explored this area,
Marla

Take the Siena Grosseto. It's a fast expressway. The volterrana road to cecina is curvy ( done it countless of times as a kid to a friend's beach house and more often than not I got car sick).
I don't know about bus options in that area. Porto santo Stefano on the argentario peninsula would be very nice. Castiglion della Pescaia is also a nice beach town.
