We will be travelling to Rome this summer to join a Rick Steves tour which begins on a Sunday.
We arrive on Friday, so we have two free days beforehand to explore on our own. We have been looking at Naples, Florence, Capri, Pompeii, etc.
Any firsthand recommendations for areas to visit, places to eat and stay and things we must see?

you might have more time than you think; tours start with dinner on "day 1" so if the tour starts on Monday you have all of that day too.
Personally if it were me I'd plan for a relaxing start; I'd go to Sorrento and relax on Friday, then go to either Capri or down to Positano the next, and wander Sorrento before catching the train up to Rome (if the tour starts Sun nite).
