My nephew asked me for idea...He finishes work Friday Sept 28 at 6:00pm. Looking for destination for the weekend (9/29-30)....can either go by train or rent a car...need to be back Sunday night for work Monday AM. Staying someplace interesting, not-touristy, in the city is a possibility too.
He and his finance...little romance, little la dolce vita...you get the idea...
Let.me suggest the very popular Umbrian hilltown of Orvieto. It is a 70 minute train ride North of.Rome Termini. Orvieto is also a popular place to pickup and turn in Hertz rental cars for those comin to or from Rome. Orvieto also has very good.accommodations and B&Bs.
hey don
"he and his finance...little romance, little la dolce vita...you get the idea..." does that mean his $$$ or his fiance? haha
take a train half and hour from rome to castel gondolfo, the pope's summer home on the lake. check for lake view room or one with balcony. nemi is a small village famous for wild strawberries on lake nemi, look on booking.com for a room with view or balcony.
another fun thing is oldfrascatiwinetour.com they have an evening tour of the frascati wine taverns and a stroll thru the small town, plus other tours. saw the family shop ceralli on a travel show, looked fabulous. bakery, pizza oven and their famous porchetta and 92 year old nonna that still bakes and the matriarch. don't know if hotel there, so gave them option for the lakes, may need to take a bus or cab to lake area. enjoy, train back to rome. they will be away from the crowds. he may want to look at eatingeurope.com under rome, trestavere street eats. hope this gives you idea for him to look at.

Hi David - thanks - I had mentioned Orvieto to him - my wife and I were there about 5 yrs ago. Also mentioned nearby (sort of) Civita di Bagnoregio and Lake Bolseno. Nice part of the country! I have forwarded your idea.
Princess - Ha! His money...I think! I have passed in your message! Thanks
