Wednesday at the Vatican

Next week my husband and I will be traveling to Rome. We've already reserved tickets for the papal audience on Wednesday but ideally would like to go the Vatican Museum and St Peter's Basilica while we're there. Is that doable? I was thinking we could grab lunch after the audience and then head to the museum and St Peter's afterwards. I was planning on reserving tickets to that as well. And was also wondering if you would recommend a guided tour of the museum or it's something we could enjoy by ourselves? Any advice would be helpful!

Thanks!

RS has audio tours you can get from the website, one for the museum and one for the Sistine Chapel.

You may find these sufficient. I know the Sistine audio added immensely to the appreciation of the experience.

I was part of a RS tour so had our guide to take us through the museum ( guides not allowed in Sistine), so have no 1st hand info on museum tour. Have used other audio tours and found them very well done.

The place is so vast you need some sort of "guide", be it audio, paper, or a live person

The museums are insanely crowded after an audience. I would wait and visit the museums on another day if you can. Reserve tickets so you can bypass the lines but remember that the museums will be crowded any time you go. As for a guided tour, some people enjoy them and some don't. If you like a more structured visit you should take the tour, if you like to wander and take your time you shouldn't take the tour.
