Weather in September

Hello,

My wife and I are taking our third Rick Steves tour, the Best of Italy, in September. The tour starts in Lake Como and the Dolomites, and gradually makes its way south to Rome over 18 days.

Since this is our first trip to Italy, we wanted to know what to expect for the temperature. Will it be cold in the north in September? What will the weather be like in central Italy by the time we arrive there, toward the end of September? Should we expect a dramatic change in temperature as we go south from the Dolomites to Rome, or is it pretty similar?

Weather should be dry and warm with the potential for hot. It WILL NOT be cold in the north in September. Evenings and morning might, might be a little chilly. Long sleeves and/or a little sweater might be needed but mid-day will tend to be very warm if not hot. Don't expect a big change.

I was in Lake Como area in mid-September 2010, and had to put on every piece of clothing I had with me to keep warm, including having to buy woolly tights in one of Menaggio’s only shops!
That was after coming north from Florence, where it was very hot.
Nowadays with such drastic changes in global weather, it will probably be a lot warmer in the lakes area.
Wherever you go these days, packing layers is always a good idea.

Hello batkins57,

We were in Varenna last September 10-13 and it was sunny and warm during the day and we had to open the window and run the fan at night. A storm had just passed through the day before we arrived so it was breezy with clouds for the first day and then warmed up after that.

We ended in Verona and Venice toward the end of the month and it was still warm during the day and light fleece weather at night - especially in Venice with the water.

Remember that August is the hottest month nearly everywhere so September isn't that far removed from there, but don't forget a rain layer.

Have a great trip!

Very difficult to say as it is a transition season and weather pattern are changing. September 1st is full summer, October 15th will be full autumn, at some time the weather pattern will change. I have seen snow as early as September 20th (in mountain areas) and people bathing at sea as late as October 5th; you cannot tell in advance when the transition to autumn begins. New weather patterns are hotter so autumn is not so severe, but rain is very possible and cold days - not chilling but cold - are also possible. In the Dolomites this was a cold and rainy summer - weather is very hot only since a few days.

@ Badkins. I posted this back in Dec 2020. The reverse of your tour. Maybe useful.

My family and I spent Sept and Oct 2018 in Italy, then Switzerland and northern France. From my travel diary the following temperature entries may be of interest to you and yours. A little prose on what we did on a day.

Sept 26 Day at Sienna 22C Lovely

Sept 27 Drove to Scarperia. My sons purchased some knives and discussed opportunities to import to Australia. Toured local Mugello GP racetrack. 26C glorious again.

Sept 28 At villa and around Todi 25C superb.

Next day drove via Lugano through the alps to Lauterbrunnen for a week. Then onto farm stays in northern France.

Do not recall need for AC. At home in Perth or Hobart, normally would only consider turning on our Reverse cycle heat pumps/AC when temperature reached 33c or more.

To recap, it was totally relaxing and enjoyable weather. Maybe the deities smiled on us.

Hope they do the same for you.

Regards
Ron

I got to timeanddate.com for actual, day-by-day, historical weather statistics, usually checking the most recent five years' data to get an idea of how likely it is to be cold, hot or wet. Information is available for most places you might be interested in.

Varenna weather September 2022 (But September 2020 had some nights with lows in the 40s F.)

Alpe di Siusi weather September 2022 (Bolzano should be warmer due to much lower altitude.)

Use the pull-down box above the graph to change the month and year displayed. Unfortunately, data for Alpe di Siusi (and even for Ortisei) is spotty, so you can't see what it was like there in 2020.

Use the Search box at the upper right to see statistics for other locations.

The Wikipedia entries for most locations include a climate-summary chart with some monthly precipitation statistics.
