Never been. Sardinia looks great. But, I'm worried about sun. I read that they only get 137 days of sun per year. Not sure which coast that figure is for or how much of a difference there is between coasts. We're thinking about Alghero on the west coast. By comparison, Rhodes gets 300 days of sun a year. And while I'm sure it would be OK, we'd really prefer bright blue skies. After that, we're off to Rome. So we could perhaps drop Sardinia and catch a few days on the coast somewhere. Do they get more sunny days on the boot? Anybody have the scoop? Thanks.
Well, we were there at the end of May one year and spent a lot of time in or on the water. We loved Sardinia! We took the over night ferry from Livorno to Olbia, and spent our 1st few days in the North at an awesome agri called Stazzi La China.(see reviews in Trip Advisor) We used it as a base to explore the NE and North coast. Then we did one night in Alghero, before we headed south to spend 3 nights in Cagliari. We spent time on the beaches there and really enjoyed them. The we flew back to Rome out of Cagliari on Ryan Air, and used a shuttle service from Ciampino to Rome (Fiumicino) We used the Lonely Planet guidbook to plan our trip, and found most of our lodging choices using Trip A. We found it cheaper to bring our rental car over on the ferry rather than renting another car in Sardinia. Our GPS was nice, but it did not have all of the small roads covered. A small Michelin map of Sardinia is a must. Using the info below, the weather looks great during 1st part of Sept, no matter weither you go to Sardinia or the far south in Italy, in fact, it looks warmer in the south of Sardinia. http://www.cicloposse.com/weather.php
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187881-s208/Cagliari:Sardinia:Weather.And.When.To.Go.html We did the heel of the boot (Puglia) in June and it was pretty warm. We also loved Puglia.
