Weather in Rome in early-October?

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to read my question. My husband and I are going to Italy for our first trip to Europe :) in the beginning of October. I'm starting to buy clothes for the trip this weekend.

Can anyone let me know what the weather is usually like in early-October in Rome & Florence? Really trying to figure out what type of outfits I need to bring. (I have limited space in my suitcase so I don't have room for a bunch of options for all different types of weather)

We will be staying in Rome for a week and taking a day trip to Florence.

Any insight on weather for October would be great!

Thank you!

Hello there, Italy was also my first trip to Europe a few years ago and I also went in early October. When I went, the weather in Rome was very pleasant, spring-like and fairly sunny. Florence was my second stop and the weather was a lot cooler and there was even light rain. I would pack light clothes - I also brought a scarf - that you could wear in layers. I really enjoyed Italy and out of all the cities I visited on that first trip, Rome is my favorite. Have fun!

I think the 2 days, 1 night in Florence is going to be perfect for us. Thanks for your help!

The above from a post you made in April

Now this statement- We will be staying in Rome for a week and taking a day trip to Florence.

I think you had it right in April.

For clothes, think layering. Check weather.com or equivalent for historic info to give you guidance on what to expect.

Rome should be low70s-80s. Evenings will drop into the 60s. The later you go in the month there could be rain.

Pack light and layer your clothes. Take a light weight sweater and a rain jacket. I also take a light weight blazer.

Layers. Layers. Layers. We have traveled to Rome and Florence in October several times The days can get quite sunny and warm. Or they can be rainy and chilly. I always take a good, but lightweight, raincoat and a good cardigan, along with knit shirts and jeans. I alway also pack a hat and gloves, incase it gets really chilly. We put the raincoat and/or sweater in a daypack to carry with us, for when the weather changes. But in general, October is a great month to visit Italy. Can you soend more time in Florence? There is so much to see there. Have a wonderful trip!

@Bernadette - thank you for your insight. I'm so glad I picked Italy for our first time to Europe and it sounds like you were happy with the choice too :) I hope we have spring like weather like you had not too much rain!

@joe32F - thank you I will be sure to check weather.com prior to leaving. Just wanted to see what other travelers have experience weather-wise during October prior to my shopping trip this weekend. I don't remember what I posted back in April but I've been trying to plan this trip off and on for over a year so the itinerary has changed quite a bit. We decided to stay in Rome for a week and do a day trip to Florence because we really want to enjoy our vacation and not feel exhausted when we get home because we planned to visit too many cities. We only were able to get a week off of work and a lot of people suggested picking a city or two for that length of time so we aren't packing too many cities into a 7 day trip and feeling like we didn't get to really experience the each city because we were rushing to see it all. Anyway that's the reason for the itinerary change and we are hoping to visit again in a few years to see the other places in Italy we missed this trip (Amalfi Coast, Capri, Venice, etc.)

@gerri - 70s - 80s is the same weather as at home that would be awesome if we got that. I'll make sure to bring a rain jacket just in case :)

@Becky - Yes I've heard layers are the way to go. I can just strip some off if it gets to hot walking around. Great tip!

Thanks everyone! :)

@Katie - thanks for the link! I’ll have to get a jacket like that. It would go with everything!

I was in Rome & Florence the first of October 2 years ago. I'm a dress girl so I took 2 dresses, a pair of crop pants and a pair of NYDJ Jeans which dry quickly. It was mostly warm but did need a light sweater at night - I have a silk-cashmere combo that is very light but keeps the chill out. And we had pouring rain a couple of times. I have a beautiful photo of Trevi Fountain with virtually no people in it due to the rain. For this reason I advocate for the second pair of shoes as both times (thankfully 3 days apart) my shoes were drenched and needed a day to dry. First time I had to buy the 5 euro street umbrella because the umbrella I brought was of course back at the hotel. Keep in mind that if you are going to be going to churches - especially the Vatican you have to have knees and shoulders covered.

Weather can be very unpredictable.
Your best bet is to check the weather as your trip date approaches.

I was in Rome last October and it was warm during the day and I wore a skirt and walking sandals most of the time. I didn’t even need a light jacket.
I always pack a light rain jacket, just in case, but didn’t need it in Rome.

Have a wonderful trip!
