I'm going to Venice, Florence, and Rome mid-November to late-November this year. Is the weather like New England? I know I'll need layers but just wondering how cold it will be. Thanks for any advice you can give.
Venice has average November low temperatures of 39 degrees and average highs of 53 degrees. They get precipitation an average of 6 days out of the month, but November is a very cloudy month for them.
You'll need to dress accordingly.
You can see historic weather data for various cities on the Weather Underground website.
Here is the forecast page for Italy, but you can also navigate to historic averages.
No. New England is colder than Italy. Temperatures in Italy are more similar to Northern California. Rome has temperatures similar to San Jose, California, pretty much year around.
To add to the first comment above, averages temperatures in Rome at that time of the year are 40s at night, low 60s during the day. Florence is somewhat in between Rome's and Venice's temperatures.
These are however averages. I have been to visit my family in Florence countless times at Thanksgiving. Most of the time temperatures were similar to where I live here in California, but occasionally I had odd years, when temperatures were unusually cold or warm.
The best strategy is to check the forecast on www.wunderground.com or similar websites, just before you leave. Forecasts tend to be accurate up to 10 days out.
We were there last year end of November, from Sienna south to Rome. Weather was fantastic. Sunny and about 60F as a high, lows in the mid 40s F. Started with a light jacket but were removing layers at mid day if we were walking. Of course Venice will be cooler and check historical norms. YMMV
Thanks, everyone! I will definitely check that weather site before I leave. Sounds like it's a bit warmer than I thought. Will still take layers though.
Six years ago I was in Rome late November. It wasn't real cold in the daytime but it rained part of each day. Sometimes the rain just started pouring! Take some sort of raincoat and head covering. An umbrella would help, but you can usually find one for sale on the street any time it rains.
November is only moderately cold by most standards, but may be quite rainy. In most of peninsular Italy even a bad day may have some non-rainy hours. In the Po valley - say Milan, Verona, Torino - once it begins raining it may rain all the day long.
