Traveling to Italy September 23-October 7 starting in Milan and ending in Sorrento on October 6. Traveling earlier I feared the heat but now I’m reading that I may have to deal with the rain. Can anyone who has traveled to Italy around the time I’m going give me an idea of what weather to expect? Will the nights be too cold and will the days be too rainy?
We were in Italy for the entire month of September 2016 and the weather was glorious. We started in Milan, Lake Como, Florence, Cinque Terre, Amalfi Coast and ended in Rome. We had one rainy day during our week in Florence and that is it. I may have worn a lightweight fleece of a long sleeve linen shirt in the evening (and I am very cold natured!) but I was never cold at night. We found it to be a beautiful time of the year to be in Italy....is there a bad time to be in Italy?????
Though no one can predict the weather, we had a similar experience with good weather in September/October 2017. Cold and a bit of rain in the Dolomites, warm in Rome, but overall excellent weather to be outside. Bring clothes that can be layered, and a water-proof jacket and you should be ready for anything.
What feels warm to one person may feel chilly or uncomfortably hot to another person, so I recommend you look at actual temperatures and precipitation records for recent years. You can find these on the Weather Underground website.
For example, here's the "History" section for Milan. https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/it/milan/LIML/date/2019-5-12?cm_ven=localwx_history
Normally it wouldn’t be cold in early October, although rain is definitely possible.
However, last week, in May, there was snow at many Italian locations, even at low altitudes above 2500ft.
This was Tuscany last week
Who would have known to see snow in May at those low altitudes? But the weather is crazy nowadays, so you can’t really forecast anything so far ahead. Just check the weather forecast just before you leave.
Thank you
