Wearing Juventus jersey in Florence

Hi,

I'm planning to visit Florence for the weekend (2-4/06) and as you probably know the UEFA CL final will take place on Saturday. I was wondering if it is a good idea to wear my Juventus jersey while going around the city because as far as I know Viola's fans (as most of the fans of other Italian clubs) don't like Juventus and I've heard some really frightening things about the football hooligans in Italy.

Thanks,
Nick

Why is this a question? You answered it yourself. Since this is your first posting, could it possible be a little trolling?

People "hear" all kinds of things if they listen for them, and who knows if they are true? Probably no one here, unless Roberto weighs in. But if it might be a problem, why take a chance? Surely you have other shirts to wear?

Trolling?!? Wow! Nope, as I've seen people in London wearing United jerseys, I've seen people here in Paris wearing OM jerseys, but in Bulgaria (I come from there) you can get into serious trouble if you wear the 'wrong' jersey. So I was just wondering how is it in Italy. Unfortunately I don't have any Italian friends that I can ask so I've decided to ask here.

Florence is not Rome where tourists wearing the wrong jerseys before a match have been recently assaulted.

Nevertheless if it's true that nobody likes Juventus, Fiorentina supporters hate the Old Lady. Wearing those colors would mean looking for troubles.

Thank you! I won't do it :) As far as I'm concerned this topic can be closed

Juventus won the 1981-82 championship. Before the last day Juventus was on a tie with Fiorentina, but as the last day developed Juventus was granted a penalty kick against Catanzaro a few minutes before the end, while Fiorentina had a probably regular goal voided against Cagliari. Since that day, Fiorentina fans hate Juventus and Juve fans are dubbed "gobbi" (hunchbacks). I do not think your life is in danger wearing a Juve jersey in Florence, but it is not a clever idea.

The rivalry between Juve and Fiorentina is well known and violence between the opposing fans often erupts when the two teams meet. When I was living in Florence, fans boasted that Florence was the only city in Italy where no Juve clubs were present. The one in Scandicci (a Florence suburb) was often vandalized. I'm sure you can find another shirt to wear in Florence. If you do and find yourself in a bad predicament, just yell "I'm from Udine!", since the Udinese jersey looks like Juventus'.

Just don't wear it. Wear a plain polo or shirt when watching the match, you probably wont run into any trouble but you may get looked at funny and people making fun of you.

Yeah, best Not to wear Any lettering in Italy cause you Never know who's going to see it and get offended! When I buy T-shirts at Outdoor Markets, my family censors my choices before I pay for them! This last time I was allowed to buy a Harley-Davidson T-shirt and that was it!

Once I sneaked into a Sports shop and bought a gorgeous soft black Juventus T-shirt, by far the most beautiful T-shirt I own, it's very stylish and very dressy, very expensive, but I wear it only when I'm in the US, and only at night like inside a comedy club.

I just never got the whole wearing of the jersey thing. It's not like they would ever call me in from the stands to fill in for a player. ;-)

IF I was going to a game with that team playing, I might wear the jersey. But just walking around? Never ever anywhere in the world.

As a season ticket holder of the New York Red Bulls soccer team, I often wear articles of clothing representing the team when sightseeing across the pond; be it a cap, sweatshirt or t-shirt (at $150 I'm too cheap to buy jerseys). Not a day will go buy that a local will stop me to talk about the team/MLS. If I happen to cross paths with another fan wearing Red Bell Salzburg or Red Bull Leipzing gear, there is always a photo opportunity. It's a great way to connect. Having said that I can also think of scenarios where it would be foolish to wear a Dallas Cowboys/Redskin/Red Sock kit here in the New York region:)

I think that sports jerseys, like t-shirts with political statements and overt nationalistic displays, are a way to attract hassles (almost always minor, sometimes annoying, rarely more scary) nobody needs to while on vacation.
