We want to elope to Rome in Aug or Sept '09... need advice

We both have large families & friends from two different parts of the world (DK & US Virgin Islands) and want to celebrate our wedding with them all! However, we want to get married this year... and plan a larger celebration next year, when more of our loved ones can attend if it's not short notice, and hopefully, we'll be able to afford it by then.

We are both romantics though and we want it to be a very special day for both of us... so Rome, a place that we've wanted to visit together, is our choice. We have 5 or 6 months to make it work though and I don't know where to start. We are REALLY on a budget & therefore, I think a wedding planner is out. We're both laid back and don't need too many frills and will have no guests with us. Can anyone advise us on what we need to arrange as far as someone to officient, witnesses, how to obtain a license abroad, etc.? I would be so greatful for ANY and all advice.

Thank you!
Stacie

The process and paperwork to be married in Italy is very long and very involved. See details at the Italian embassy's website at http://tinyurl.com/4y98oq . The least of your problems will be a no-frills reception.

To make it less stressful, plan a civil ceremony for just before you leave at the local city hall and use Rome as your honeymoon. There is a lot involved in getting married in Italy. You can have a ceremony in Italy as well this way, but you don't have to worry about all the legalities you need to set up. Did you want to get married in a catholic church? That gets even more complicated.
