We will be staying in Trieste on our way to Slovenia. Are there hidden treasures we could experience or some obvious ones we might miss? Also, is there a convenient way to get to the WWI museum in Kobarid? We can't ask Ernst Hemmingway :)
Trieste has good art gallery, but we most enjoyed the tram journey on an historic route to the Slovene border. I can't remember the number but you will easily find it.
I don't know where you will be in Slovenia but if you are in Bled or Bohinj at you may be able to take the historic steam excursion which visits Kobarid and is a wonderfully scenic ride on ancient, or at least vintage, rolling stock. I enclose link to Slovenia rail website.
Thank you, David and Quirite. After Trieste we will be headed to Ljubljana for four days and will be taking day trips from there. You are so helpful. Thank you again for your responses
How are you planning to cross the border? By bus, taxi, or rental car? If you take the Trieste-Opicina tram, you can now catch Slovenia trains at Villa Opicina, but there are still connections required to reach Ljubljana, making train not especially convenient.
Laura,
We are going into Slovenia and onto Ljubljana by private transfer from a partner of Slovenia Explorer. I learned that the train connection is usually through Austria and is long and complicated. Thanks for watching out for us.
I am thinking about taking Opti Shuttle or public bus back to Trieste where we will spend another night. I did purchase train tickets for the next morning to Padua.
Edmonds is our home town and we are blest to have Rick Steves there. His father was our "piano guy" for decades.
Thanks again,
Jan
Thank you, Laura and all. We have found the solution. Gregor Födransperg at Slovenia Explorer Travel Agency is providing us with a trip from Ljubljana down the Soča river valley to Kobarid then back to our hotel in Trieste. He has also arranged for us to see the other sites from Rick's travel book and the lectures from Cameron and Gretchen that were given in Edmonds. He has emailed back immediately with transportation and guidance for a wonderful plan for seeing the country that the Rick Steves' team put on our 50th anniversary celebration trip. The website is in the Croatia and Slovenian Travel book in the Ljubljana section.
