Wanted to see what people would recommend for our 3 days we have openned between being in Rome and picking up our houseboat from Crown Blue Line outside of Venice.
My husband wants to save Tuscany for a seperate trip. We thought of getting to Venice by train and renting a car and driving to the Dolomites or Lake Garda - or -Taking the train from Rome to the 5Cinguas for 3 day and then the train to Venice. I checked out the train from Rome to Venice and it is 4 1/2 hours. From Rome to the 5Cinguas is about 4 1/2 hours and then from there 6 hours to Venice. Is it worth taking this side trip to 5 Cinguas for 3 days? Would there be something else we should do instead? (but not Florence)
Thanks
How about visiting Le Marche? It's on the way north towards Venice. Urbino is a great hill town, and from there you can drive around and explore the small towns. You could also spend a day at the coast in somplace like Pesaro. Amazon has books about Le Marche.
You could also head south and spend 3 days in Sorrento. You could do this all by train from Rome, then use Sorrento as a base to explore Pompeii, the Amalfi coast, Capri, etc.
If I wanted to head north, I would train to Verona. The ES train leaves at 9:00 and arrived nonstop in Verona at 1:30. Renting a car there gets you much closer to Lake Garda or the road north to Bolzano and the Dolomites. Verona itself is a great city for a short break, and you can bus up to Lake Garda for a day trip.
Thank you for both suggestions.
Looking at Marche - also renting a car latter sounds better - away from the city.
