We had a good experience with Airports Taxi Transfers

At the recommendation of someone on this forum, I hired Airports Taxi Transfers to pick us up at our hotel in Varenna and drive us to our hotel in Milan this morning. The driver’s office sent me a message this morning to let me know he would be 35 minutes late because he was stuck in traffic due to an accident. The driver arrived 35 minutes late as promised. He stopped at a small store in Varenna to buy cold water for the 3 of us for our 1.5 hour drive to Milan which I think is very thoughtful.

Just wanted to share our good experience because I remember someone else had a negative experience.

Thanks for sharing. So much better than the train experience. Do you mind sharing the cost, and for how many folks? Safe travels.

Hi Pat,
The cost is 165 euros, and there were 2 of us. We were willing to pay this fee because I had read horror stories about the regional train from Varenna to Milan. It was worth it to us especially since we are both in our 70’s.

Kate, we experienced the horror stories. You chose a more relaxing option. I think you made a great point to add extra time for road traffic. Car service is easier, but not faster. Hope your entire trip went well.

Karen, thanks for posting this! It's always good to know what the options are.

That is too bad about the train, though. I took the train between Milan and Varenna back in 1997 and I remember it being a very pleasant journey with no problems. In fact, I met another woman on the train and noticed she had the same Rick Steves ETBD book I had. We started chatting, found out we were staying at the same hotel, and wound up spending the next 3-4 days together while we were there.

Regardless, I hope you had a nice stay there! It's such a beautiful area!

Karen,

I am so relieved that your experience was good, the delay was unfortunate but it is a reminder to always build in extra time. I felt horrible when another poster experienced a no show.

How was your ferry experience? Some of those stories have been a nightmare!

Have a good trip home!

Hi sunny22,
We actually had good ferry experiences, and I think that is because we didn’t have great weather but we were still able to do things. All 3 days we had a combination of rain, overcast skies, and a bit of sun. So maybe some of the daytrippers stayed away.

We never had to wait in line to buy ferry tickets or board the ferry. This was true in Varenna, Lenno, and Menaggio. Bellagio was very different, though. When we disembarked, the line to board our ferry was ridiculously long, and the crowds were awful in that area. So we stayed 10 minutes in bellagio and then got in line for the next ferry to Varenna.

Mardee,
We had a wonderful time! I can’t believe it’s almost over.
