And I booked a Vatican tour. After reading Rick's book noticed this is a major holiday (Thurs May 9). Not my religion so I have no idea....is this going to be a problem being at the Vatican that day?

Not a terribly major holiday: It's not even on the Vatican calendar of Liturgical Celebrations. The website shows tickets available at all hours that day. f the tour company is conducting tours, you are in good shape.

RS is right, Ascension Day is one of the most important holy days of the Catholic calendar. In the US it is usually moved to the following Sunday, not sure if this applies to Italy. If the Museums accepted your request, you are good to go. Laurel, the vatican.va site liturgical celebrations calendar is incomplete.
