On day 2, be sure to stay up as late as you can and see the Trevi fountain late at night. It will be packed, but that's the best part!

re Pompeii - Last month I went to Herculaneum & then Pompeii...& preferred Herculaneum. It has interiors (w/ roof, wall art, etc) you could actually walk into, much smaller distance between interesting building. In Pompeii, a lot of the specific points of interest that Rick's guidebook suggests to see in Pompeii were not accessible (& I only found that out after I walked multiple blocks on uneven pavement.) Pompeii outshines Herculaneum in having ruins of a forum & basilica & the extra miles you walk.
re Weather - Be sure you have water, hats, etc for Pompeii/Herculaneum. It was noticeably warmer than Rome when I was there.

Quite an itinerary. Looks aggressive so dont forget to take a moment to feel the beauty and history of your surroundings. Dont get frustrated with the drivers in Italy and be ready to step up to the autobahn speed in Germany.
I will be interested in hearing of your drive to the Amalfi coast as I will be trying that myself in October. I know you will have a superb time as each of the stops are places I have had the good fortune to enjoy.

Best of luck

I know you are close to going but why are you driving south of Rome. We are planning a trip to Italy and the part of the trip that is south of Rome seems better served by public transportation. We did fly into Rome and drive north one time, which worked well.

Thank you for all the great feedback. Many of the sights we will see are at the request of our kids.
Last time I was driving in Paris, Amalfi and Rome, I was a young man 1/2 my age. This time I will be sure to take some B/P medication with me.
