We are spending 3 nights in Varenna on Lake Como and want to take a water taxi tour of the lake. We will be there August 19-22. We are thinking of doing the 2. 5 hour group tour that includes a tour of Villa Balbianello but don't know if it wise to book that before we arrive or if we are safe to be able to book when we get there?

I didn't do a tour of the lake on boat from Varenna. We took the ferry boat around the lake and got off at different towns. I did see signs and some information at the varenna docks for some of the tour little boats. It appeared like you can book those when you get there and not book in advance.

At the bottom of http://www.taxiboatvarenna.com/en/tour-di-gruppo/, they seem to say that bookings are not really confirmed more than 48 hours in advance. However, August is high season for visitors, so I would go ahead to get on their list. You only have two days open to you, and they may only run the tour perhaps twice per day.
