What????? does the title have to do with Disney not sailing this summer? Or with the linked article which has no bearing on either.

They are both cruise-related. I don't know where Disney goes or when, I am so not that audience.

with Italy still under lockdown how can they think about cruise ships visiting Venice in just over a month?

From the title, my first thought was this was going to be about an enclosed ski lift gondola - LOL. But seeing the article link, the Venice mayor, and his second-in-command couldn’t be more delighted to have huge ships coming and going. So says the CNN story, which seems to be more of a Cruise Venice booster ad than a completely thorough reporting piece.

And yet Royal Caribbean has stopped using Venice as a port. They’re taking a careful, longer-term approach, while others are making hay while the city remains above sea level, for now.

So the saga continues....

I'd be surprised if they can start up cruises that soon.

Does anyone know why they can't sail to/from the Venice port, going south and west of Giudecca instead of through the Giudecca Canal? Is the water not deep enough west of Giudecca? Or is this about keeping them entirely out of the lagoon?

The chanel south and west of Giudecca is too shallow for large vessels. Cruise liners can use the Malomocco/Chiogia entrance to the lagoon, and sail up the Petroleum Canal to Marghera.
