Warning car rental Italy with Autovia

I had prepaid with Autovia car rental pickup at Firenze airport. They now require an international drivers license effective June 2024. So they denied rental on a prepaid 7 day rental. No satisfaction at counter after an hour wait. Avoid at all costs. Was able to get a refund through booking.Com and found a proper rental at Avis with no problemo.

Welcome to the forum!

IDP is required by law and has been for some time

You just got lucky that Avis didn’t ask you for it

From Rentcars.com explaining the requirements for renting a car in Italy: "It is the renter's responsibility to present both their IDP and Driver's License when picking up the vehicle."

I see this is your first post. If you are traveling abroad, it is up to you to know the requirements. An IDP is cheap and easily available from AAA. Why should I "avoid at all costs" if they are merely enforcing the requirements for renting a car in Italy? As someone mentioned, the Avis desk goofed up by not requiring you to present an IDP.
