Hi, my husband and I are semi-retired and are looking to spend a year in Italy starting Sept 2020 using that as our home base as we travel around Europe. We, unfortunately, do not know what our first steps are as far as visa's and what we need to have for proof of funds etc. I am a UK/US dual citizen -I don't know it that will hinder or help us- tbh lol. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Wendy.
You may want to contact the poster from the thread referenced below (Karen). She and her husband have done this and also keep a blog about the experiences.

The most reliable source of information is found on the Visa tab of the website for the Italian Embassy or the Italian Consulate that's responsible for your current home location. If you have questions, contact them to clarify. What I can say from investigating this myself is that your husband will need a visa and you may need one as well (Brexit). You will need to provide proof of income, proof of health insurance and proof of a place to live (cannot be a hotel).
Read this blog for information on living in italy for a year.

Hi wmeng,
This is/was a poster - Catherine - who made a move to Orvieto, Italy for about two years. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/living-in-italia
Perhaps take a read through her posts regarding the prep for her Orvieto move, along with her little dog. It is an interesting read. A lot of paperwork and prep, so be prepared. Good luck.
Do you hold a UK passport?
There are Facebook groups of people who have done this both from UK and US. Pm me and I'll send you the links. With Brexit on the table, I am not sure how helpful having a UK passport will be anymore. No one knows really.
