Want to add on to my Sorrento trip but where? what about Montepulciano?

Wanting to add onto my Sorrento/Pompeii/Amalfi trip but where to go after? We like to get out into the country and are into food and wine. Previous trips included Rome, Venice, Florence and we rented a car in Florence and did Tuscany (Sienna, Voltera, San G., Pievescola etc) but we weren’t able to get to Montepulciano and have always been kinda crazy about that area wine wise and wanted to go back and go there. What do you think about adding that on or should I look elsewhere?
If I do Montepulciano- what do you think the best/fastest way to get there from Sorrento is? I’ve looked at a lot of options and one of the easiest may be to rent a car in Sorrento and drive ( or rent when we fly into Naples and drive to Sorrento (posts about driving out of the airport say that it not too bad.) Drive from Sorrento to Montepulciano is appx 257 miles appx 4.5 hours. We will being flying back to the US from this final leg so assuming I would need to get to Florence or Rome for a night or two to fly out of. Thanks so much!

Tuscany, Umbria or the Piemonte would satisfy your desire ro be in wine country. We dound the Piemonte so much less crowded than Tuscany. You could fly from Milan back to Rome or take a train.

How much time do you have? I think it will take at least 5 hours to drive from Sorrento to Montepulciano. Or you can take trains to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme and rent a car there if you need one.

If you have only a few days, Puglia has wonderful wine. Uncrowded except in summer when the Italians flock to the beaches.

How much time do you think I need? I haven't booked flights yet tho it is in September so I better get poppin! I will look at where you suggested too. Thanks! I was thinking of staying 3 nights or so and leave out the 4th day to Florence or Rome and spending some time there. Do you think that is enough time? I looked earlier at the train route you suggested plus a few others. Rome2rio said 5 hours and 20 mins from Sorrento via train to Chuisi and then 30 mins drive plus additional time to get fm train to rental car and check out/get car etc. so 6 hours or more so I thought that maybe driving fm Sorrento or Naples would require less coordination and be faster and we could stop somewhere cool for lunch.......

I would rent a car from Sorrento and visit Puglia instead.
You are already in the south.
Montepulciano and Tuscany can be visited on your next trip to Italy. You’ll stumble into it. It’s not too far from Rome, maybe a couple of hours. And not far from Florence (1.5 hrs). Also next to Umbria.
But making it to Puglia, in the south east, requires a specific effort because is out of the way. Since from Sorrento it is not too far, I’d take advantage of it.

Three or Four nights in Puglia, longer if you have it, will be delightful. Head for Lecce, spend some time in a coastal town, drink lots of Primativo. In Puglia, as an Italian friend once said to us, "Si mangia troppo ma costo meno." (One eats well but it costs less.)

I would never have thought of this. I thought someone would suggest a place in Umbria closer as a suggestion or somewhere off the train line that would not require a car. I know nothing about this area that y'all have suggested and will check it out. Not sure if I can give up my wine country dream but can't wait to investigate something new. I love this forum. thanks!!
