I have read the different walks available in Rome.
My questions is HOW I find the actual starting points, street names and exact route???
Kathy:
I picked up a fabulous book called "24 Great Walks in Rome." I think I got it at www.Powells.com. Rick Steves' Rome book has 3 or 4 good walks, but "24 Great Walks" adds many options in different neighborhoods. Very detailed with maps, points of interest, etc.
Kathy
It is amazing how easy it is. We had dinner in Campo Fiori and after for a stroll we just followed the crowd over to Piazza Novana and from there people doing the same thing heading to the Pantheon and then over to the Trevi fountain. Take Rick's little map for reassurance.
how do you know the exact starting point...it doesn't say on the map in the book
Kathy:
Rick's instructions from place to place are a little like a treasure hunt. Referencing the "Night Walk Across Rome" it starts in Campo de' Fiori. Once you look around the Campo, follow the directions in italics. In this case, you orient from the statue "Bruno" to navigate to Piazza Navona. Get a good Rome map from the TI to supplement the maps in the book which are pretty stylized. If you get lost, hey! It's Rome! What a great place to wander. And you can ask someone to get you back on track.
Happy orienteering!
Google Earth Streetview is also a good resource for this.
I would check an RS map, which has landmarks clearly marked and study it before (I'm a map nerd, so this is fun for me). And as Laurel stated earlier, it'll turn into a fun treasure hunt.
Hi Kathy,
I would highly recommend the walks that RS has in his books. We all of the ones in his book (Roman Forum Walk, Dolce Vita Stroll, & night walk). It was fairly easy to follow. We did get a little turned around in following the Night Walk instructions but that is part of the fun. Getting lost and finding new things.
The walks will all tell you where to start the walk and you'll be able to get map when you arrive in rome to be able to figure out how to get there. RS also has a map in his books to help as well.
Good luck and have fun!
Rick's book was good but I also picked up something called "City Walks Rome - 50 Adventures on Foot" by Martha Fay. Its a box with handy cue cards with descriptions and maps on cue cards that are easy to travel with.
Kathy,
We were in Rome in January and did all of Rick's Walks. Like others have said follow the starting points he gives. Most street signs are on the corners or sides of buildings, not on poles. Follow his general routes and if you get lost that is a great part of the experience. We found our favorite "Back Doors" when we were lost. I would also strongly recommend the audio tours on MP3 player and PDF maps. I listened to them before i went so I would have an idea of what I was looking for. It helped a lot. Good Luck.
