walking tours in Italy

We're celebrating some big numbered birthdays/anniversary this year and are looking at putting together 2 weeks in Italy - we would like part of it to be 4-5 days of hiking/walking/that sort of thing. Very open to what - we are good hikers so anything from 6-12 miles a day is good. Advice??

Sara, Italy is a great place to celebrate! If you are looking for an organized walking tour, I have heard great things about Backroads (www.backroads.com). They send catalogs to me, but I have not personally traveled with them ...only fabulous reviews from friends that have. If you have not visited Italy before, I highly recommend RickSteves' "Heart of Italy" tour .... one does a good amount of walking (in city/villages) with his group tours, and then you have plenty of free time to do even more (such as at the Cinque Terre stay), if you would like. But, for a village-to-village type walk, definitely check out Backroads.....not inexpensive, though. Also, check out university alum sites.... professors often offer active itineraries that might be a perfect fit for you. Regardless, if you have not been to Italy before, be sure to include Tuscany and the coastal areas (Cinque Terre/Amalfi) on your itinerary. Have fun!
