Good ones? bad ones? Do I need to book ahead or should we wait until we get there? We're going in July...Thx
I can't imagine that walking anywhere in Venice would be bad.
There are a gazillion walking tours of Venice online. What are you looking for?
I am considering http://www.theveniceexperience.com
We have two days before we take the train to Florence and hook on to a tour. Just want to hit the basics (Doges/St. Marks) and maybe one Burano or Murano) The Artiva tours look highly recomended but seem expensive (18 euruo for 45 min?). Maybe I'm missing something..The Venice Expereince looks interesting..
With a Venice travel book and a map/schedule for the vaporettos, you can easily explore Venice and the islands on your own.
Thx to all. I think we will check things out when we get there...Steve
Get Rick's Venice book and you can do some of his walking tours on your own. Plenty of info. We also like the "Insight Fleximaps" (Florence, Venice) that are laminated. Venice maps from the TI are not good. Bring your own and you aren't wasting time looking for one. Sign up for a free Border's Reward Card and you will get coupons e-mailed every week, usually from 20 to 40% off. Great for purchasing travel books and maps! Have a great trip!
On my second trip to Venice, I went in to a Tobacco shop and bought a map that included all campo's etc. (think I pad 4Euro for it). The map I bought in the States (nicely laminated) only listed major streets/campos. The good news is, if you get lost (which is quite fun in my opinion), the city has signs pointing you in the direction of all of the key sites.
I would recommend against going to Murano or Burano since this appears to be your first trip to Venice. However, if you still want to, do Murano. It's a lot closer than Burano.
And, yes, do go check out some of the campos in addition to San Marcos to get more of a feel for the real Venice.
IMHO, there's plenty to do in Venice proper without looking for reasons to leave.
Getting lost is absolutely part of the fun of Venice.
