Walking the Amalfi Coast

My sister and I are planning a walking holiday from Amalfi to Postano this September 2019. Curious to know how well marked the trails are and the degree of difficulty.

Also would appreciate info on transportation from Naples to Amalfi.

Thank you.

Also would appreciate info on transportation from Naples to Amalfi.

This is the least expensive way:
Take either the Circumvesuviana local commuter train or the Campania Express tourist train from Naples to Sorrento. At Sorrento take either a Ferry or a bus to Amalfi.

there is a small book covering the walk/s, its called sorrento, amalfi, capri car tours and walks, by sunflower books. We used it last year for some of the walks in the area
hope this helps.

I will second the sunflower books, been over 10 years since I di any walking in the area and from what I can remember the paths were well marked, sometimes it does seem like you are going through somebody's garden though.

I sort of agree with Jazz, but mostly not so much. There are 2 inexpensive ways to go from Naples to Amalfi, via Sorrento and via Salerno. If you have a lot of luggage and/or are ready to splurge for comfort, a more convenient way is with a private driver.

To Sorrento, you would take the Circumvesuviana or the Campania Express from Napoli Centrali to the end of the line. Note that the Circumvesuviana can be crowded and uncomfortable (it's basically a metro train used by lots of locals). The ride takes an hour or more and the trains run about twice an hour and the departure times are not reliable. The Campania Express runs about once every two hours and is used mostly by tourists. Then you can get a bus to Amalfi from the train station or you can make your way down to the seaside to take a ferry. While the idea of taking a ferry is attractive, it's not at all close to the train station.

To Salerno, you would take a Trenitalia train from Napoli Centrali. These are fast, comfortable trains and the journey takes a little more than 1/2 hour and are usually on schedule. You can book in advance. From Salerno, you can take a bus outside the train station to Amalfi or you can walk about 5-10 minutes on level ground to the ferry pier and go by sea.

The bus from Sorrento takes about 1.5 hours, from Salerno maybe 15 minutes less. I think the high speed ferry takes about 1/2 hour from Salerno, about 1 hour from Sorrento.

On trails, it depends. Path of the Gods is reasonably well marked. There were also others on trail. We walked back from ravello and that was through gardens and the like which was actually very interesting. Not hard to follow. Then we got to Atrani and had no idea where to go. We asked someone and were told to walk through the outdoor area of a restaurant!!! Sure enough close by was a tunnel which we went through and ended up back in amafi town! We also hiked from amalfi on a trail by the museum of paper but am not sure of the town we ended up in. What I do remember is it was a Sunday and almost everything was closed. We couldn’t find a bus back so ended up walking back down a staircase.

Beth! I love that trail across from the Museum of Paper, but I have only gone so far as to get to the big waterfall and turned around.....one of my favorite places in all of Italy!

I am planning on the path of the gods as well in April, and pondering that sunflower book too :)

Well we stumbled onto a couple people from area who convinced us to go all the way with the idea we could take the bus back. Well, almost nothing was open. We found bus stop but it wasn’t clear what schedule the schedule was. We finally gave up and walked back.

So my advice is to do the hike but not on a Sunday!
