Walking Orvieto

Is walking in Orvieto a particular challenge? An acquaintance who loves the city suggested to me that getting up to the historic center is a hike. I see that there is a funicular from the train station. I am apprehensive because one member of my party doesn't have a lot of stamina for hills and stairs and has to take them slow because of asthma. Thank you!

Daniel, IMHO, walking in Orvieto is not particularly challenging at all. As you noted, there's a Funicular that runs from the station area to Piazza Cahen. The walk from there to the Duomo area along Corso Cavour is a somewhat gradual slope, so not difficult for walking. Would the distance of the walk also be an issue? Happy travels!

There is a lovely flat walk around the edge of the city at the top, that goes along the city walls. I found most of Orvieto to be flat - just a bit up hill from the
main gate to the duomo.

There are buses to take you from the funicular at top to the Duomo area, which I would recommend. Upper Orvieto is very flat for the most part.

Daniel There is a bus that will take you from the funiculare station to the Duomo Plaza (if I"m remembering correctly your funiculare ticket is good for that bus as well) On our first trip to Orvieto ,not knowing about the busses, in a blinding rainstorm wheeling our suitcases behind us. For some reason we laughed hysterically the whole way up the hill. If some in your party have mobility issues they could take the bus to the Duomo and walk back down to the funiculare station OR even take the bus back down and meet you.
