We'll be in Rome in October. We've got an early flight out of FCO (Leonardo da Vinci International Airport) and are staying in Fiumicino the night before. Our BnB is less than 1 km from the airport. We are hoping to just walk to the airport in the morning but we're not sure if that's possible. Is the airport accessible by foot? Thanks in advance for your help and advice. (BTW, we're in Italy for a 3 week backpacking trip so walking and carrying our bags isn't a problem for us)
Write the BnB and ask them if there is a safe way to walk to FCO as they ahould be able to answer hour question.. We have walked from the FCO Hilton but it is right at airport.
You can map it out yourself by putting in the address of the BNB to FCO.
Be prepared for the answer to be No. From what I can see, the roads approaching the airport don't have a wide enough shoulder or any nearby path. But the B&B will definitely know.
Thanks for the reply's. I had thought of checking google maps and its shows a 12km route to the airport! But we hadn't thought of asking the BNB host. I got in touch with her and she says you cannot walk into FCO. The bus and train don't run early enough. So we'll have to take a cab but we've also thought about skipping the BNB and going directly to the airport the night before and just hanging out until morning.
What's the name and address of the B&B?
My answer however is almost certainly no.
Assuming it's in Fiumicino, you'd need to walk for sure on the Viale del Lago di Traiano, which is a boulevard that has no sidewalks and no shoulder (and cars don't drive too slow either). I wouldn't want to be run over a car in the dark on the way to the airport.
Request a taxi.
Have you checked to see if your B&B offers shuttle service? I see that some of them near the airport offer that service.
I can't think of anything I'd least want to do in Rome as spend a night at Fiumicino unless it's spend a night at Termini (which I definitely would not do).
As I am aware the only place where you can walk to the airport from is Hilton at the airport. We stayed there few times for very early flights.
I wouldn't recommend going to the airport the night before and hanging out. There is a Hilton on the grounds of FCO which is connected by walking paths to FCO. I'd eprecommend staying there.
A night at the airport? I wouldn't. Stay at the B&B, and reserve a taxi.
