Walking in Volterra and San Gimignano vs Sienna

Hi all. Seeking some personal thoughts about the walking difficulty in Volterra and San Gimignano vs Sienna. I have some mobility issues and have been to Sienna numerous times. I think I would like to visit both towns in May and I’d like to have a comparison with Siena, especially in regards to steep hills. I would be taking public transportation from Florence. Thank you!

Can’t speak to SG, but I have been to Volterra and Siena. It’s been awhile, but if I remember right, Volterra is hillier than Siena, but not too steep. There were some streets that might be a challenge- they have a cheese rolling contest down one street- but this wasn’t in the main part of town that you’d need to visit. From the arch that’s in the guidebooks, the street goes up, but I wouldn’t call it steep either from the photo, and that’s probably the worst you’d experience. From the bus terminal to the museums and main Piazza I think were ok.

Volterra and San Gimignano are “hill towns” and similar to Sienna in their hilliness.

both are pretty flat or very low grade of steepness from and to the bus stop.
In Volterra get off at the main stop on Poazza Martiri della Libertà. From there to Piazza dei Priori, the main square, it is a short walk on flat terrain.
In San Gimignano I don’t know if the bus enters the historical center, but assuming it drops you off at the wall gate of Porta San Giovanni, the segment from there to piazza della cisterna or Piazza del duomo is not steep at all, just a low grade, for what I can remember. Obviously there might be some ramparts that you may or may want to walk too, as there might be steps along the way, so it depends on your degree of mobility.

I like to use Google maps- "walk" from one spot to another and check the incline.
