I am using the Italy forum as there is not a separate one for Malta. I will be in Valletta for one day on a cruise. Does anyone know if the town is walkable from the ship dock? Also, my local bookstore doesn't have any Valletta maps or books with maps in them. Is there a TI near the dock?
Yes it is walkable. We did the same. I don’t know whether a TI is nearby. As I recall it’s pretty much uphill but don’t really recall the details. We spent a few hours walking in the town and then took a public bus to Medina and returned to Valletta. We did have trouble getting back to the ship, oddly as we could see the ship….not sure why…just couldn’t find the right way down but eventually made it.
It is very easy. There’s a lift which takes you from the harbor to the historic center. It is inexpensive, something like a euro if I recall. We took the lift up and walked down. It’s a beautiful city.
Valetta is very walkable and rewarding. You may wish to research hours the cathedral is open to non-worshiping visitors, and current restaurant recommendations. I used Lonely Planet, which might be in your public library. There is an extremely famous underground iron age (??) UNESCO WHS just outside Valetta, which has very limited visits because of breath damage and so on. It books up months and months in advance. It would take up much of the day, but I thought I'd mention it. We couldn't get tickets.
