Is it easier to walk from Porta Catania to Porta Messina, or vice versa?
(Which way is down hill?)

The main drag between the two gates is totally flat so it makes no difference. The side streets are hilly though and the way to the theater and back is not completely flat.

On Corso Umberto (the main drag which as stated above is pretty flat), facing Porta Messina with Porta Catania behind you, for the most part down is to the right and up to the left. But...(trying to remember)...to go to Teatro Greco, you go down to the right and then up to the theatre.

As mentioned above Corso Umberto is a relatively flat pedestrian walkway. Everything else in Taormina is steeply uphill or downhill. We spent a week at the very nice B&B Sara located higher up the hill from Corso Umberto.
