I will be visiting Bologna in October and plan to go to San Luca - has anyone walked the portico? If so is the walk very difficult? Looking at Google maps satellite it seems to have some steep grades - my husband is fit but with "knee issues". Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Joni,
The walk there is uphill and can get steep and there are quite a few steps. The way back is way easier as it is downhill.
My friend and I are relatively fit and remarked it was more difficult than we thought. We didn't make it to the sanctuary but rather were admiring the porticos.

I walked it when I was 61. As Jackie stated it is a long uphil climb and steep at times. Bring lots of water. My knees were not an issue.

According to Rome2Rio.com, it's over 800 meters from the Croce bus stop (take the bus from the Marconi stop to Croce). I would consider doing it that way, and then walking the entire way back.

We did it one January. So happy it was not hot!!! It is a work-out. If climbing stairs is an issue, he may have trouble. We just found ourselves breathing heavily and amazed at all the fit young people running up it! it is beautiful and worth the effort.

Thanks for the feedback. We will put it on the maybe list - wait and see how the knees are doing.
