I was wondering if there is anyway to travel from Volterra to Lucca without going through Pisa or Florence? If not, does anyone know how much a hired driver or taxi would approximately cost? Thanks!
I'm not finding any direct connection between those two towns--there's not much between them other than hill country. The transportation routes all seem to go through Pisa. Best bet is a train, 2hr20min with one connection in Pisa. Pisa is not too much of a deviation from a straight line between the two towns.
Having gone from Pisa to Volterra last September using public transportation, I can tell you there are limited options. Lucca is just north of Pisa, so connections go through Pisa or Florence. You can take a bus to Saline di Volterra train station and then train to Lucca via Cecina and Pisa, or you can take a bus to Pontedera and then train to Lucca via Pisa. You could also take buses to Florence and then train to Lucca. All these options will take about 3-1/2 hours, allowing for changes. Guessing that taxi or hired driver would be very expensive compared to train/bus options. Good way to find out if taxi or hired driver is possible and how much it would cost is to ask your Volterra hotel.
