How do I get to Lucca from Volterra by train or by bus. What would be the least circuitous route to take? Thanks,
Darby
Darby, a couple of ways to do this. Take the Bus 1999 from Volterra to Poggibonsi. From there, take the train to Lucca. 1hr10min for the bus and just over 2hrs for the train portion of the trip. A second way to do this is to take the Bus 1999 from Volterra to Florence and the train from Florence to Lucca. 3+ hours for this method. A third way is to take the Bus 1999 to Pontedera and from Pontedera-Casciana Terme, take the train to Lucca. Train change at Pisa Centrale. A little over an hour from Volterra to Pontedera. Same journey time from Pontedera-Casciana Terme to Lucca. You might see school children on the bus to Pontedera on school days.
For all but Sunday travel, I would recommend taking bus #500 from Volterra to Pontedera and train from Pontedera (requires one change at Pisa Centrale). You can find the bus schedule at www.cpt.pisa.it. Best to avoid buses that double as a school bus (ask when you buy your ticket, as bus schedule isn't marked). The Pontedera train station is just a block from the bus station; you can see it as the bus pulls into the bus station on the main square. This was the most direct route I could find when I went to Volterra.
