Would like to know what everyone thinks about staying here for 2 or 3 days. Is there some other place in Tuscany that you would suggest we stay at instead ? Thanks Ron...
After recently watching two travel programs that featured Volterra, I really want to go. It looks so....charmging and midevil?
We recently spent 2 nights in Siena, and spent an afternoon in Volterra with a private guide (Annie Adair, who was awesome BTW). After that afternoon, we absolutely loved Volterra and when we go back to Tuscany, we'd like to stay there instead of Siena. Just loved the feeling of the town.
For us, Volterra was a nightmare. It was probably just a coincidence. We arrived on a Saturday evening in August that happened to be their all-out party night. They said it happens one Saturday a month during the summer. We also could not find any parking. My son and I checked out one of Rick's recommended hotels. They had rooms at the top, no a/c, and she said the party goes on until about 3 a.m. Needless to say, we left and found a wonderful B&B down the road--quiet and with a/c. (PM me if you want the info). It does look like a great town--I think we just hit it on a bad day. My husband would not go back--he's the driver.
When we visited Volterra for a daytrip several yrs. ago we found it very uncrowded and untouristy. Enjoyed our visit here very much.
I spent 2 nights in Volterra a couple of years ago and loved my time there. There was plenty to do and see for 2 days, but 3 days might be too much.
Volterra is charming, but very small. There are some interesting museums and Roman ruins to see. Famous for their alabaster products (expensive) We were there when they had a festival with costumes and drummers and cross bow contests...so much fun
Good to use a a base to get to other small hill top towns in this region. I'd say stay there, but only for 2 days, then move on for another experience.
