Volterra, Rome, Sorrento

We originally were going to go to a northern lake region but have changed our minds. Sept 2015 our plans are to visit Volterra, Rome and Sorrento. We have been to Rome before but my husband would like to do the underground tour of the colesseum. Our interests are good food, relaxing and my husband is very interested in the history of the gladiators. I plan on 2 days in Volterra, 2 days in Rome and 5 days in Sorrento with day trips to Pompeii and Capua. What is the best way to get from Sorrento to Capua? Any other suggestions would be much appreciated for hotels, etc??

Thanks

To get hotel suggestions, you need to list your budget, in euros ("moderate price" means different things to different people). You also need to specify what kind of amenities you want or need. Elevator? View? Cooking facilities? Do you prefer a large business hotel or a small guesthouse, or something else? Etc, Etc. Help us help you!

Sorrento is a wonderful base for that whole region. For years I've stayed at hotel il Nido. Comfortable, affordable, excellent restaurant, amazing views and shuttle service to and from town. The bus for the Amalfi Coast stops right there in front of the hotel. Of course seats will be limited.

We are very active 50 y/o's. Our budget is moderate but is flexable. We like the small boutique style of hotels. This is our 3rd trip. Relaxation, food and wine are high on our list!!

Terry, you need to list specific amounts, not "moderate". That can mean anything and does to different people. If you want specific suggestions for something that will fit your budget you need to tell us what that budget is.

Terri,
My husband and I stayed here in 2007. You may want to check it out. Beautiful views of the sea and Mount V. Away from Sorrento, but a short mini bus ride, with the stop just around the corner. Awesome breakfast view. The place has an old world luxury feel to it.

To reach Capua, Circumvesuvian from Sorrento to Napoli Centrale.

Then regional train Napoli Centrale to Capua around 1 hr.

This Amphitheater is not as well preserved as Rome, but very enjoyable. You can wander around the lower

levels and get a good idea of what it was really like.

You would also be about 15 min. via metro from Reggia Caserta. Great Palace and beautiful grounds.

Capua-Caserta

Take a look at the 3 day Campania Artecard tutta la regione, if you plan on at least 3 attractions.

If your husband likes gladiator history, he might like to see the Gladiator Mosaics in the entrance hallway of the Borghese Gallery.

In Sorrento, we loved Palazzo Montefusco. It's highly rated on Trip Advisor and for good reason. The rooms had modern appointments and were comfortable and spotlessly clean and the staff was fabulous. We loved the breakfast buffet complete with a different homemade cake every morning. The food was all fresh and artfully displayed. The location was excellent, just off Piazza Tasso which is convenient to public transportation & the hotel sits on a pedestrian-only street that offers many dining & shopping options. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

As for Rome, we splurged a little and stayed at Albergo del Senato right next to the Pantheon. We got a room overlooking the Pantheon & piazza and loved it. The hotel was very nice and we really enjoyed the views and people-watching opportunities.
