Volterra question

We have 3 days around Florence. We are going to rent a car. Seen Florence many times and were thinking about staying in Volterra for a nite or 2. Is that a good base for a few days?? Any one stayed and can recommend a small historic hotel??
Thanks!

In 2012 we stayed outside of Volterra for one night at Agritisimo Podere Marcampo and loved it. We are going back in October and staying there for 3 nights. It is a short drive into town
and there was a lovely city walk tour just about every night of the week that is very good. I remember the roman ampitheater on the walking tour in particular. Our Agritisimo has said the tour still exists, though it may have a minimal charge. This lodging has a wine tour (their farm produces wine) and a cooking class. Volterra is only about 35 minutes from San Gimignano and an hour and half from Lucca. Only an hour from Siena. Probably best to have a car rental for the area. In 2012, the agritisimo also had a restaurant in town where we had the best food of our Italian trip. I think you will love Volterra. And i think Rick Steves has said it is his favorite Tuscany town.

We stayed at La casa in giardino last October. It isn’t a historic hotel, but a warm and cozy entire apartment complete with everything you need to stay there. We said we could have easily spent a week. It has free parking, and only a 5-minute walk to the main gate of the walled town. Francesca was wonderful about answering questions, and left a basket of treats for us.
