Volterra Question

Planning a return trip for 2014. I've read Rick's book on the Volterra section already. I enjoy the small towns. Is Volterra a better option to stay over for 1 night, or just do a day trip from say Siena to see the town? I would be using the bus/train combination.

This past trip I also didn't mind taking the 6:50am bus from Siena to Florence to get a full day in the city. So departing early to visit Volterra wouldn't matter to me.

Just curious since I never been if the day trip vs a 1 night stay would be better?

Robert, you don't say which month you will be traveling, and that might make a difference, related to how many visitors and tour groups might be around. I made a day trip to Volterra just last month, Actually I started in San Gimignano and then moved on to Lucca late in the day. I spent about 5 pleasant hours in Volterra, seeing the sights, lots of walking, spent time in the Etrusan Museum, had a good and quick lunch at a nice self-serve type restaurant. There were very few visitors in town, in October. That was enough for me, although certainly evenings and early mornings are often the nicest times in hill towns as in many parts of Italy. In the middle of the summer, when tourism is very high, an overnight might be more important. Of course, if you spend the evening and night in Volterra, you are missing the evening and night wherever you started out. I found the evening in Siena to be magical!
