You could rent a car or you the next best thing would be to take the train from Venice to Florence (through Milan, may have to change trains there) Then once in Florence you could take the train to Montepulciano has a train station, but it's a bus ride or steep walk to the city center. The bus from Florence to
Volterra is 2 1/2 hours and takes you to the city center.

The best method by train is to take the high-speed from Venice to Florence. Then, take the Bus 1999 from Florence to Volterra (2hrs). Here's the link to the bus schedule. http://toscana-toskana.de/volterra-it/bus.htm It looks like there is a long bus change in Colle Val D'Elsa. One option is to take the SITA bus from Florence to Colle Val D'Elsa and change to the Volterra bus. The wait may be shorter. Here's the SITA bus link. http://www.sitabus.it/sita-toscana/Firenze-Siena2010.pdf Note that the SITA bus station is about 800' southwest from the Florence train station. You can see it in the RS Italy book.
