We will be in Florence this June and would like to take a day trip to Volterra. Is this doable? Does anyone know the website for the bus company where I can look up schedules and fares? I am assuming the bus would be easier and quicker than by train.
Thank you!
Here's the SITA bus company website: http://www.sitabus.it/en/tuscany-by-bus/
Thank you for posted the website, however I do not seem to see an actual timetable/schedule on this site for the Florence to Volterra route.
Train from Florence to Pontedera, bus from Pontedera to Volterra. See line #500 at http://www.pisa.cttnord.it/Linee_e_Orari/Linee_Extraurbane/L/134
Unfortunately this is not a quick trip. Would be much faster by car. It is also possible to reach Volterra by bus with a connection in Colle val d'Elsa, but I suspect it would be more difficult and slow than by the Pontedera connection.
By the way, Volterra was serviced by one of the very few rack railways in Italy, that was closed in 1959. There is still a basic railway service to Saline di Volterra from the coast (not recommended).
When on the website I linked you can scroll down and there is a list called Related Articles and one of these is Florence-Volterra. If you click on this it takes you here: http://www.sitabus.it/en/florence-volterra-bus-timetables/. It shows two different routes with links to their timetables.
