We are driving from Lucca to our accommodations near Pienza. We are planning to stop in Volterra and San Gimignano. Is that too much to see in route? We won't be leaving Lucca until about 10 am. Note: we have 2 kids with us (6 and 10). If we had to pick between the 2 which would you recommend? Also, any comments on the underground parking in Volterra? Theft?
Hi Kelly - I just got back from taking a small group through San Gimignano as well as Volterra - Not a problem in one day - A bit rushed BUT well worth seeing both towns which are only about 30 minutes apart. Very little theft problems in Tuscany - Do not be afraid - Enjoy.
Ciao, Greg
Hi Kelly. We visited both towns in 1 day in Sept 2009. We spent most of our time in Volterra only because we had visited San Gimignano previously. It is doable but a bit rushed. We had no problems parking in the underground lot in Volterra. We never felt unsafe. It would be difficult to pick between the 2 towns but if I had to choose only one, I think it would be Volterra. We had a very memorable half day tour in Volterra with Annie Adair (She shows Rick Steves around in his show about Volterra). She made it very interesting & pointed out things that we would not have known on our own. There are many interesting things in Volterra and we easily could have spent an entire day there. Have a great trip.
To go to both in one day, would it be better to go to San G in the morning and Volterra in the afternoon, or the other way around? Or does it really make a difference?
Been to both places and they are lovely. Like others stated you should be able to see both in one day. Volterra is probably the less touristy of the two if that helps you make a decision. Buon Viaggio!
Is that same plan easily doable via train or bus as opposed to a car?
I can look it up but just curious if somebody has tried it with the train or bus.
Thanks!
Ok so my next question is if we run out of time to stop at San G. Would it be worth it to drive by to view the towers and get some nice distance photos or is it not worth a detour off the main road if we run out of time to stop and walk around after our time in Volterra?
Also, from what I've read. I think this area is tough to visit without a car. Maybe by tour bus?
