Volotea or Ryanair to Sardinia from Tuscany

I am looking for suggestions for traveling from Florence to Sardinia. I understand no flights go from Florence so I will have to leave from Pisa or Bologna. Since I have not yet made definite plans while in Sardinia I can go to Olbia or Alghero. Any recommendations for the airline regarding the airlines? I was able to find a flight from Bologna to Olbia on Volotea but it is a 8:15 am departure which means we would have to leave Florence at approximately 5 am to be safe. That's probably not going to happen unless we stay in Bologna the night before which means we will have to give up a night in Florence which I would rather not. The flights from Pisa are not nonstop and have a 7 hour layover in Bari :(.

All advice is greatly appreciated.

The Pisa Airport timetable shows that RyanAir has non stop flights from PSA to AHO every day of the week except for Mondays and Fridays. Volotea flies from PSA to OLB on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays (but not on Mon-Wed-Sunday). These flights operate throughout the Summer. So it looks like only Mondays and Fridays are days that neither airline flies to Sardinia non stop. Check if you can modify your flight date to match the availability of flights from Pisa. Another alternative is to fly from Rome, which probably has a lot of choices, but that adds time and money to the journey.

Roberto,
I am apprehensive to fly Ryanair. The reviews are horrible, additionally, after all of the fees, and additional charges it is not saving much $$. Have you used them if yes, what do you think? I am flexible because the only set plan so far is we arrive in Venice on Aug. 26 and fly home from Rome on Sept. 5.
My ideal plan was 2 nights Venice
3 nights Florence
6 nights Sardinia
1 night Rome for the return flight to NYC

i have not been to Venice or Florence in 10 years and would like to revisit; be it brief as it is all I can do. I have been to Rome 2 years ago and love it but have been there several times before.

The likeliness of me returning to Italy after this trip is remote. I realize my plan is aggressive but I'm hopeful.
Thank you for your help as you have in the past. I reviewed my RS posts
Sincerely,
Lorie

In this instance, I would think the thing to worry about is getting where you want to go, not saving money. I don't think Roberto was suggesting RyanAir because it was cheaper, but rather because it offers the routing that you need.

Lori, I have used Ryanair, and I think many people have because once you are in Europe, it is one of the main domestic European airlines for short flights. It is a very ... utilitarian airline. You pay for every thing, and its policies are non-negotiable, which is why I think so many people write bad reviews. But if you go in eyes wide-open, it can be useful. No one is ever going to love hard plastic seats and piecemeal fares and non-refundable everything. I have flown it a few times and maybe been lucky to not have any issues (knock wood). Obviously I pay the fare that allows me a carry-on handbag (purse-sized) plus suitcase. I think this is called "priority". I am flying Volotea and Ryanair on my upcoming trip.
In your shoes, I would fly from Bologna, and in my case Id choose the option of leaving for the airport at 5am. But what if you few to Sardinia from Venice, then from Sardinia to Bologna and on to Florence, then to Rome. So Venice, Sardinia, Florence, Rome?

I have never had the privilege to fly RyanAir. However if you want to fly within Italy, aside from Vueling or ITA, which fly limited domestic segments, the choices for the most part are only two, either RyanAir or Volotea, they have a quasi monopoly on the Italian market, both are low cost airlines which have similar restrictions. The good thing is that flights are very short. From Pisa to Alghero you won’t even have time to unbuckle your belts after take off that you have to buckle up again for landing. They may not have such great price after you pay the extra fees, but flying from Bologna, besides the super early departure, will cost you €29 in train fare plus the taxi fare from the station to the airport, unless you take the Marconi Express people mover, which costs only €9.20 for the 8 minute ride. It also depends on where you are going, and the rental car deals between Alghero and Olbia. Your choice.

FREQUENZA means frequency.
1, 2,…,7 are the days of the week. 1=Monday and so on all the way to 7=Sunday. There are multiple lines per destination because some flights have different effective dates, but in August, in the middle of the peak season, there are 3 weekly flights with Volotea (Tue, Thu, Sat) and 5 with RyanAir (Tue, Wed, Thu, Sat, Sun)

Great information...

I am able to book a 6:20 flight from Pisa to Alghero. At what time should I be at the airport. I am staying in Florence near the train station. Should I book a private transfer or can I rely on train or bus? Additionally, should I stay in Pisa the night before. I believe it takes about 1.5 hours to drive from Florence city center to Pisa airport.
Thank you again

You should be at the Pisa airport at about 5:00 if the flight departs at 06:20. One hour prior to departure would still work, since it’s a domestic flight, but I’d rather give myself at least 75 min.
I would spend the night before in Pisa because the only way to get to the Pisa airport by 5:00 departing from Florence is by taxi or private car, which can get you there in about one hour (unless there are traffic snarls due to freeway roadwork, which is common during the night hours). However that is an expensive option because the flat fare Florence-Pisa Airport is €160. Unfortunately there are no trains that early in the morning that can get you to Pisa on time, the earliest arrives at Pisa Centrale just before 6:00am, The bus shuttle service from Florence to Pisa I think is now operated by the Caronna Tour company, but I don’t know if they have such early departures that could get you to Pisa airport on time.
