While in Sicily next week I am wondering what is the best method of keeping in touch with my family in the USA. I want to be available for emergencies, Skype with my grandson, access local info and use my phone for GPS. Verizon has plans that appear to be acceptable but I can also purchase a SIM card or Vodaphone . All advice is greatly appreciated.

I would opt for a local pay-as-you-go SIM card if your phone supports it. US cellular providers' international plans are expensive, especially for data, and it sounds like you plan on using data intensive applications.
