Visting Rome at Christmas Time (12/23- 12/28) Questions

Hi,
Backround: My family of four spent 8 days in Rome in the summer of 2011 staying near Campo de Fiori. That gave us time to visit all of the main sights. We love Rome, but decided to try seeing it at a different time of year, so we are going next Christmastime. We'll arrive on 12/23 and depart on 12/28 (5 nights).

My husband is trying to get tickets to midnight mass at St. Peters. My concern is how do you get back to your accommodation (if we decide to stay in the center) after the late mass? Is it impossible to get a taxi? Is it safe to walk or take the metro? Or is the best option to choose accommodations near the Vatican?

Where do you recommend we eat for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day? Restaurant recommendations appreciated, but nothing terribly expensive. For a family of four, up to a $200 bill. More moderate restaurant recommendations for the rest of our stay.

Also, any/all advice regarding having a special time in Rome at Christmastime would be appreciated!
