We have 4 1/2 (12-4:30) hours to have lunch, visit Castel S. Angelo and then walk to Galleria Borghese, arriving 1/2 before our allotted time. My question is how much time should I alot to Castel S. Angelo?
Our other option, lunch and walk seems to allow too much time for wandering. I thought of the Catacombs of Priscilla might fit in, but we do want to walk (first day in Rome)and I think towards the Center, rather than away, might be more interesting.
The Basilica at Santa Maria del Popolo is not open at these hours but could we wander in the Piazza for more than an hour?
Though the Spanish Steps were not on our list we could wander by them as we walk to the Galleria if we do not visit Castel S. Angelo.
So...how much time for Castel S. Angelo and/or any suggestions for that area?
If you are planning on walking thru the Gardens on your way to the Galleria, this could consume at least an hour.
You could visit Castel Sant'Angelo and then walk to Piazza del Popolo; from there, go to the Pincio which is at one end of Villa Borghese park, and walk around the park until you need to be at the Galleria Borghese. The Pincio is a large terrace with beautful views of Rome. There is a footpath from the Piazza del Popolo up to the Pincio.

Thanks for the suggestion of Pincio to add to our walk, but what would you recommend for time at Castel S. Angelo?
We spent 2 hours at Castel Sant'Angelo and felt that was enough time; however, that included the evening tour of the secret passageway etc.
Inside the gate of the Castello, at least 90 minutes. I would allot two hours.
We spent about two hours there and we weren't rushed. Really enjoyed walking through it and lots of good views.
