I’m working on itinerary for driving portion of our May trip. First segment is from Venice to Canazei. I’ve looked at car route suggested by rome2rio. We will want to stop occasionally to enjoy views and stop for lunch. I would hate to miss the perfect place just because it might require a little side road we wouldn’t notice unless pointed out ahead of our trip. Any suggestions for specific stops we should make?

There is a nice place in Santa Croce del Lago overlooking the lake. Bar Ristorante Bolognese. Get off the A-27 before Santa Croce on the SS-51. Indoor and outdoor terrace with great views.

Sam, thanks! That looks like a nice spot for lunch and probably will be the area where we'll be ready to eat after leaving Venice. Any suggestions for other stops after we get off A27 towards Canazei?

I don't know what route you're taking, but using viamichelin No 1 rec, when you are close to Canazei, you will go over the Passo Podoi. There is a cable car there, Sass Pordoi. Take an hour and ride it up for views from atop the Sella Massif, including across to the Marmolada Glacier.

Sam, it appears the lifts open this year for summer on May 15. We'll arrive in Canazei on 14th, so I do plan on going up the lift the next day! So exciting! When we were in Dolomites in 2016, it was 'off season' (end of April) and many things were closed.
