Vista Gold is not Varenna. We made a big mistake to book an apartment at the residence Vista Oro, we faced a long and impractical 45 minutes climb , that we had to pay a taxi every night and it was not inexpensive, even the walk down to Varenna was exhausting.There are no shops, no restaurants, no bars, only the view was beautiful but we felt completely alone and abandoned outside the world: everything we were promised was only an illusion: Varenna was just to watch and hope not to miss more next time. The residence consists of 20 apartments and looks like a barracks, who had a car complained of the extremely difficult site parking when going down to town.The swimming pool measures only 4 and 8 meters then unsuitable for all the residence guests.Don't forget to buy anything in town to take home by taxi because public transportation do not exist and there is no possibility of buying something without pay at least 30 euro taxi between go to town and back.One day was very cloudy: I could not see the lake and even the road to go down, we seemed to be in a country of ghosts.
This is not Varenna!

Sorry to hear of your bad experience, and thanks for the warning.
Hopefully you'll get a chance to return to Varenna and have a more favourable travel experience. Any of the accommodation listings in the Italy Guidebook should provide you with a better stay.
