visiting Viterbo

How much time should we allow to go from Rome to Viterbo and the fountain garden nearby by train and bus. We will be going in mid-December if possible. Do you recommend making the effort?

It is a slow trip to Viterbo by train from Roma, nearly two hours from Stazione Ostiense. That's each way, of course. I guess it depends on how much you want to see Viterbo's fountains versus other sites you might more easily visit, and how much time you have.

I've never been there, but I'm not sure the fountains and gardens at Viterbo will be the most pleasant place to visit in mid-December, especially if it's cold and raining.

Alternatives for a daytrip from Rome are Orvieto and Spoleto, both less than 1,5 hrs from Rome by cheap »Regionale« train.

There is a train to Viterbo from Stazione San Pietro (near the Basilica) that takes 1 hour 40 minutes to get to Viterbo. (Not sure if that one is running in December.) Then it's up the hill. I don't know if the gardens are close enough to walk to, or if there is public transportation, or what the weather might be like. Viterbo was once the Papal Seat, so there are things in the city itself that are interesting. I visited there many years ago, planning to return next year.

I think you must be referring to the gardens of Villa Lante, which are very nice in the spring or summer. It's definitely a good weather place; the villa itself is not worth the trip. You haven't given us much information; but I'll throw in that if I were doing a day trip of that distance, I'd go to Orvieto.
