My husband wants to go to Italy in late fall and we were wondering if it would be a good time to visit Venice and Lake Como? We want to see the snow on the mountains. Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!
Our plan is to start our trip in Venice, then on to Verona, Lake Como, Milan, Florence, San Gm, Genoa,Montalchino, Assisi, Treia, then end our trip in Rome. We hope to do this all via Trains and buses. I imagine we'll spend about 22 days in Italy before returning to the US.
Jan,
IMHO, any time is a good time to visit Italy! Both Venice and Lago di Como will probably be "quiet" in November so you shouldn't have too many issues with crowds. The weather may not be perfect but with appropriate dress that shouldn't be a problem.
With the visit to Lago di Como, were you planning to stay in Varenna?
Happy travels!
I would agree with Ken, that spending two nights in each location might not be enough, considering travel times. My wife and I were first timers to Italy last month for two weeks, and the one thing I regret was not spending enough time in each location. We felt we did not have enough time to get familiar with a city, enjoy the people, and to relax. Our next trip to Italy will allow for more than two nights in each location, especially the major cities.
Thanks to Walker and Ken! Guess we'll have to rethink our trip and make some changes! Maybe one day in Milan to see the Last Supper then on to Lake Como. After that, perhaps Venice, Florence, Assisi and Rome. We can always do day trips from the major cities! We'll definitely do some more planning!
Also, consider the weather. It can be cold and wet in November. We don't like to be in transit during bad weather.
I'm so happy that you all have the experience! Thanks again Chris and to all!
I just returned from Italy two days ago. I spent four days in Venice and it was one of my favorite places. Weather was patchy clouds (typical moody Venice weather) and a little rain but not enough to slow me down. And while there were still plenty of tourists, there were probably far fewer than there are during the high season. I would go back there in a heartbeat!
We love Venice in November. We are going again next month.
Thanks Gwen and Chris for the info!
Jan,
Visiting 11 locations in Italy in a 22-day time frame is going to be a bit "challenging", to say the least. That allows only about two days in each spot. Keep in mind that you'll need to allow for adequate travel times between destinations.
I'd would highly recommend having another look at your Itinerary, and possibly dropping a couple of spots. You could start with Milan and Genoa.
Hopefully the others will also have some comments on this aspect of your trip.
Good luck with your planning!
Hi,
I am planning to visit Italy (Rome, Florence and Venice)in November 2010 during thanksgiving...Please let me know if that is the right decision or not with respect to the weather & I need information about the official holidays in italy.
Weather is weather. You can't predict it 100% correctly, 100% of the time. I stopped planning my vacations based on weather.
Generally speaking, November can be wet and cold or sunny and cool. It will not be hot but it can be pleasant.
I pack to be able to layer my clothes to be prepared to whatever weather nature brings.
