I will be spending four nights in Verona and four nights in Venice in late May. I have been reading about the Veneto towns of Cittadella, Bassano del Grappa and Castelfranco Veneto, all close to each other and apparently linked by train trips of about 15 to 30 minutes. I expect to be limited to public transportation at that time. Have any of you visited these towns? If so, would you recommend any or all these visits for a day trip? Would it be better to make the trip from Verona or from Venice? Could all three be easily visited on the same day? Any thoughts about the best order to visit the three, or days of the week to avoid for some reason, or best places for lunch or even dinner, would be appreciated. Grazie as always.
They are closer to Padua or Vicenza. Venice is slightly closer than Verona.
When in Venice you should visit Venice, or at most Padua and Murano island. Venice is the most expensive place in terms of hotels, therefore you shouldn't choose hotels in Venice to visit someplace else far into the mainland. Also if you happen to have a hotel far from the station, it might be a long walk to the station too. If you have 8 nights available in the area consider splitting them differently. You could limit your stay in Venice to 2 full days (2 or 3 nights) and spend the rest of your days in the interior.
Bassano del Grappa is one of our favorite places (it's only 30 minutes away). Not a whole lot to do but just a gorgeous little town, extremely scenic and definitely worth a visit. You might even see me fly fishing below the bridge, it's one of my favorite spots...
Also consider a hotel in Mestre, right near the train station, for your 4 nights allocated to Venice. That will place you in easy reach of Venice (with very good train and bus links back late), day trips along the train line, and easier transfers to Verona and VCE. And cheaper...
