Visiting Vatican Museums

Hello, I pre-purchased tickets to the Vatican Museums. I've printed the voucher. When we arrive at the entrance, does everyone in my party have to show identification or just the person whose name is on the voucher? I'd rather not have everyone in my family carry around their passports. Thanks for your help!

Betsey, it's recommended to always have all the passports on you these days...although that has been a subject of contention on the forums! :O)

If you are traveling with young people/children who have reduced-rate attraction tickets, ages are sometimes checked. This can be especially true if they look to be on the edge requiring an adult ticket or too old for free entry, where applicable.

Honestly, even if six people told me they only had to show one passport, I'd have them all with me (assuming you had to submit all the names to get the tickets). Policies can change, personnel can be in a bad mood, whatever. It would be a serious shame if only one person was admitted to the museums.

Plenty of American visitors carry their passports around with them all the time; actually, I think it may be a legal requirement to do so in Italy (though widely ignored).

Even if I have my passport with me, I really don't like to take it out. I've found that a driver's license is fine for both ID and proof of age everywhere I've been in Europe. For kids, a student ID card would probably be fine too.

Last time I went to the museums, there was a separate (much shorter) security line for voucher holders. I don't remember if they checked ID or not. I would not expect everyone to have to show ID to get into the building, though it may be necessary when you get to the agent to pick up the tickets.

Thank you, I was wondering if a driver’s license would be sufficient to use for ID while we are out and about.
